As of Tuesday morning, you couldn’t step into the Mt. Charleston Fire Station due to thick mud.
“It’s all gone, we are working out of our trucks right now,” Assistant Chief Jason Douglas told an 8 News Now reporter.
Tropical Storm Hilary brought heavy rains that didn't spare many, if any, structures.
Douglas said it was a race against time to save any equipment needed to save lives. Gear for the volunteers was destroyed.
The combination department is working to replace the equipment.
“The magnitude, I don’t think that’s something any of us foresaw,” Douglas said adding that visitors should stay away from the area as roads and hiking trails are damaged and impassable.
